Quaint diamond in the rough paddle boarding destination
(Castlegar, B.C. Canada)
Located between New Denver and Nakusp B.C. Canada.
This little diamond in the rough was a real pleaser for me. Summit Lake Provincial camp site is situated right on the lake. Both are small but have loads to offer. My fly fishing husband insisted the lake was perfect for paddle boarding so I was happy to agree to this new destination for paddle boarding, fly fishing, and cycling. The camping was a bonus.
It was clear skys, bright sunshine and calm waters on arrival. A family equiped with three paddle boards were frolicing on the lake. The dad was SUP fishing, one daughter was paddling with two family dogs and pulling her sister on an inflatable at the same time. When I saw that, I knew this was going to be good times over our four night stay.
You won't find SUP rentals, electricity or water hook ups, but you will find a lush camp ground with fabulous views, a two mile long lake for flatwater and moving water SUPing (depending on the wind), swimming, small vessel fly fishing and sailing. Pretty little islands to paddle around and a rail bed wrapping around one side of the lake for cycling or quading. A twenty minute drive will get you fresh supplies if needed.
This was a July trip and we did find that gusty winds can pick up quickly but never lasted too long. I was able to paddle twice a day. Will we be back for more?..you bet. Next time we'll invite more family members to join us.
Note: there are 35 camp sites and no reservations allowed---first come first serve. Visit Jim in #1. He looks after the site and will let you set up in a grassy area to wait to move into a vacant spot. This is a beautiful quaint lake for paddle boarding!
